I bought this book a while back, and was excited to read it given it's high user rating. Well, lesson learned. Apparently if you write your own reviews, and/or get (pay?) others to write glowing reviews, you can fool people into buying your book. This book was horrible. I read a LOT of books - some great, some not-so-great, some not good at all, and this is one of the few times a book was so badly written that I couldn't bring myself to finish it. I simply did not care how it ended, and I almost never feel that way, even with a bad book.
For one thing, I got the distinct impression reading it that this was written by someone who is pretty much the opposite of the main character. The only thing I bet they have in common is their gender and a background in science. The way the lab and technical portions were written, it was clear that the person writing it has a background in science. However when it got to things like the main character's vehicles, clothing, and social life, I got the impression that this is how the author would like to see himself, or perhaps, what he thinks a "cool guy" would be like, talk like, act like. Almost like he was living vicariously through this character. Now, I'm sure that a lot of of authors do that, to some extent, but the main character was such a poorly written caricature of the "cool guy" that it just bordered on the sad.
Secondly, the plot just was awful and not anything that compelled me to keep reading. The dialogue was contrived and thin. Everyone was some kind of poorly written stereotype.
I think the author does have potential, but I think he needs to keep working on his writing, on writing believable compelling characters (not just caricatures or voyeuristic ideals), improving dialogue, and creating plots that make people want to keep reading.
That brings me to the review issue, which is why I most feel the need to write this review…
After getting about 2/3 in, and deciding I simply couldn't read another page of this craptastic book, I went back and re-read through the 4 and 5 star reviews, and could only conclude that they were written by the author, himself, or by people he asked, or paid, to write those reviews. I mean seriously, people saying this is on of the best books they've read? Really? I can't imagine a universe in which that is not a shill review.
Seriously. It's THAT bad, people. I deleted it off my Kindle because I couldn't stand to look at it.

The Real James Cole 9781936377336 Books Reviews
This was an intriguing and imaginative story that deserved a better telling. It could have been good if the author had just stepped away from the thesaurus and listened to actual human beings interacting with one another.
Parts of the dialogue that actually could have worked toward showing the characters' personalities in a natural way were painfully over explained as if the reader is too stupid to infer from the context that when the Asian grad student with bad English says "flattened", she means "flattered". Because she's Chinese. From China. Not from around here. A few more vaguely amusing mistakes are then over explained to you, to drive the point home, you know, that she's a foreigner, and sounds dumb when she talks, you know, and then she proceeds to explain how free radicals can cause errors in mitochondrial DNA in perfectly intelligent English for two pages, while the main character, a scientist studying viral DNA, mind you, repeatedly interrupts to ask "In layman's terms?", which she can also manage just fine, with no "amusing" mistakes to let you know how endearingly foreign she is.
While I found other issues with the writing, the misused adjectives and misunderstood metaphors probably stood out the most. Just because you happen to like a certain turn of phrase doesn't mean you have to find a way to work it in where it doesn't mean what you want it to mean. To most of us, a "glass house" implies hypocrisy, and therefore doesn't really work as a descriptor for your good girl heroine's pure and honest heart. As a reader, it tends to jar you right out of the story when your mind keeps finding "that does not mean what you think it means" moments.
My unsolicited advice is to throw out your thesaurus and buy a dictionary instead. Speak plainly. Say what you mean. Be true to your characters. Don't insult your readers' intelligence. And be a little nicer to Chinese people, especially if you're going to make them do all your research for you.
I stated this book with great expectations and I guess I was expecting too much from it. I thought the idea of the story was great and the plot was fairly good but there was something I did not like about it. He kept going back to what had happened and what was said by various characters too many times. It just seemed like a lot of repeating to me.
I expect to be shocked at how a story ends but I was more disappointed then shocked. I had figured out by the middle of the book exactly who the bad people were. Where was the shock factor in this book? I did not find any.
Ok, so im not going to one of those extremists and say it was the best thing ever, nor will I say it was terrible. It started out really slow, I started it and put it down for about a week before getting to the second chapter. I would say the reason I kept reading was I wanted to know more about the "hippie queen." However that story became fairly obvious within the first half. I kept wondering why she did the things she did...what made her the evil bitch she clearly became?? To me, James Cole fell short In that department. For a book that was fueled by the presence/mystery of one character, I felt like I needed more. Also, as someone previously stated the main character let me down in the intelligence department, especially since he was supposed to be...well, intelligent. That being said, I have to admit I kind of liked it. I know, weird right? It was different from anything else I've read lately. If there is indeed a sequel, I would read it!
2.5 stars Interesting premise although not that well written. It was choppy, never sure of the primary story, none of the characters were likable, the bio chem details were confusing and some of the tangential stories did not add to the flow.
The ending was not all that predictable (which is good) but somewhat staid. It was not a fast read as some parts required re-reading to comprehend what was going on.
I rcvd kindle book as free download a while ago and it had been sitting on my device for a while.
